Male Fertility Test in London: Expert Private Semen Analysis

Pre-treatment fertility assessments for men

Male Fertility Test

The most common cause of male factor infertility is due to semen abnormalities. For men, a fertility assessment involves a semen analysis, otherwise known as a seminogram. During a semen analysis, a sperm sample is analysed to establish the sperm count (or sperm concentration), sperm motility (how the sperm move) and sperm morphology (the shape of the sperm).

In some cases, sperm quality is affected by certain lifestyle factors, such as drinking alcohol, smoking or being overweight. Your consultant can discuss your sperm test results with you and advise whether changing lifestyle habits could increase your potential to conceive.

Your fertility assessment includes:

  • Private Semen analysis
  • A 60 minute consultation with one of our fertility specialists to discuss your medical history, sperm analysis result and potential implications of your result in your future chances of conception.

The cost of a Male Fertility Assessment is £375.

Please note that a semen analysis is included in the Couple’s Fertility Assessment.

Causes of Male Infertility

Male infertility can be caused by a range of factors, many of which affect the quality or production of sperm. Understanding the underlying cause is a key step in planning effective treatment.

1. Semen abnormalities

This is one of the most common causes of male infertility. Issues can include a low sperm count, poor sperm motility (movement), or abnormal sperm shape (morphology). These factors can make it more difficult for sperm to reach and fertilise an egg.

2. Testicular disorders

Conditions affecting the testes—such as undescended testicles, varicoceles (enlarged veins in the scrotum), or infections like mumps orchitis—can impact sperm production and quality.

3. Ejaculation problems

Ejaculatory issues, including retrograde ejaculation (where semen enters the bladder instead of exiting the penis), delayed ejaculation, or a complete inability to ejaculate, can prevent sperm from reaching the egg.

4. Hormonal imbalances

Although less common, hormone disorders involving testosterone or other reproductive hormones may affect sperm production. These imbalances can result from conditions like hypogonadism or issues with the pituitary gland.

5. Genetic conditions

Certain genetic abnormalities, such as Klinefelter syndrome or Y chromosome microdeletions, can impair testicular function or sperm production.

6. Effects of cancer treatments

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy can have a significant impact on fertility by damaging sperm-producing cells. In some cases, fertility may recover over time; in others, permanent damage may occur.

7. Lifestyle and environmental factors

Smoking, heavy alcohol use, recreational drugs, obesity, exposure to heat (e.g. from saunas or hot tubs), and certain occupational exposures (like to chemicals or radiation) can all negatively affect sperm health.

Identifying the root cause of male infertility through tests such as semen analysis, hormone profiling, and medical history review allows our specialists to recommend the most effective course of action.

Frequently Asked Questions

A male fertility test at our London clinic typically includes expert semen analysis to evaluate the number of sperm, their movement (motility), and shape (morphology). Depending on your reproductive health needs, additional semen analysis tests—such as sperm DNA fragmentation or a MAR test—may be recommended. Some patients may also benefit from hormone blood tests or a physical examination to assess overall male reproductive health.

A semen analysis is a key part of any sperm test. It checks the quantity and quality of sperm in a sample, including the number of sperm, motility, and morphology. Comprehensive semen analysis can also include additional tests like sperm DNA assessments or semen culture to screen for infection. This provides accurate results to help identify potential fertility issues and plan appropriate fertility treatment if needed.

No referral is needed to book an appointment at our London clinic. We welcome individuals and couples directly—whether you’re experiencing fertility problems, planning IVF treatment, or comparing fertility services with other clinics.

You’ll typically receive your private semen analysis results within 48 to 72 hours of providing your sample at our London clinic. Once your results are ready, you’ll have a dedicated appointment with a fertility specialist to discuss the findings and potential next steps.

Depending on your results, further investigations may be advised. This could include sperm DNA fragmentation testing, a MAR test, semen culture, or hormone profiling. However, many patients only require a single appointment and initial sperm test to gain clarity.

Yes—your general health and lifestyle can significantly impact male fertility. Factors like poor diet, smoking, alcohol use, stress, or being overweight may reduce sperm quality. During your consultation, we’ll offer tailored advice on improving your reproductive health and boosting your chances of conception—whether naturally or through IVF treatment.

We recommend producing your sample onsite at our London clinic to ensure timely analysis and accurate results. In some cases, home collection may be possible, but we’ll guide you based on what’s most suitable for the type of test required.
