Assisted reproduction: How much do you know?

Birth rates in the UK are falling while the average age women are having their first child is rising, according to the Office of National Statistics. Meanwhile, the HFEA reports over 1.3 million IVF cycles have been performed in the last 20 years in the UK alone. The rising number of women and couples starting their families later in life is one of the factor accelerating the growth of assisted reproductive technology and research.

Our survey explored how much women today know about assisted reproduction, as well as their view of fertility treatment as a form of family creation.

Key Data

Nearly two thirds of women know someone who has had fertility treatment, while more than 1 in 10 (13.4%) have had it themselves

Approximately one third of women (32.1%) aged 35 and under would consider freezing eggs

Over 80% of women (80.4%) believed fertility treatment increased the likelihood of having a twin pregnancy

Nearly three quarters of women (73.9%) under 30 would have IVF in the future if they needed it, compared to less than half (49%) of women aged 35 – 39
